No School on Weekends

No School on Weekends
The Issue
My daughter studies in Amity International school Noida. Though on paper they have a five day calendar, recently they have started having a working Saturday every month! It is not this school alone. A lot of schools in Delhi and NCR are following this practice.
Are they not able to finish their curriculum in the given five day week... even for nursery and KG?? Globally educational institutions ensure that school children are not under stress, have minimal homework and lug no heavy school bags. But in India we are adding to our already stressful educational system by adding workdays.
The reason they give is they have to complete a certain number of working days every month (supposed instructions from the directorate of education) so they compensate holidays by working Saturdays.
Its not voluntary, the teachers coerce the students to ensure attendance.... even threaten to hold back important documents like revision sheets etc for older students. Its an unfair practice!
I think children need two days off after a week to rest, recuperate, spend time with family or just play with friends! From class nursery to class 12, rest and rejuvenation is more beneficial than dragging them to school for yet another day of work. Its an unnecessary burden on students as well as on parents.
In this age of working parents, its all the more important that children get to spend some time with them over weekends. While offices are trying to shorten work hours by introducing flexible work hours and allowing work from home, we are inversely having to send our kids on holidays.
