According to the statistics by theguardian.com, Sri Lankan meat consumption per capita has been on the increase as indicated by the numbers 3.3(1990), 5.6(2000), 6.6(2002). The Department of Animal Production and Health states that chicken meat availability per capita had increased from 6.68 kg in 2012 to 7.14 kg in 2013. This clearly accrues to the fact that the number of animals to be butchered to meet the needs of a growing population gradually rises. Other than the livestock, the fish and wildlife confront the same traumatic death and altogether millions are brutally massacred to satiate the two seconds' tongue savor of the consumers. As a nation nurtured in the religion of Innocence and noble culture, we find it abhorrent to let this inhumane, barbaric practice persist. The animals have the right to life on equal proportions. The killing and other inflictions such as scientific testing caused by human beings are obvious confiscations of such rights and animals cannot voice for themselves.Therefore, as the concerned, intelligent, responsible and righteous people, we take the daring step to demand the ban on the slaughter of animals of any species for consumption of meat or any other purpose in Sri Lanka via the Animal Welfare Bill being processed by the Ministry of Social Services, Welfare and Livestock Development. In the event of failure to enact the ban in the bill, we demand from the government to pass a bill containing such ban.
