The Issue

Note_USCIS

I am a Ukrainian living in Ohio under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and like many others in my situation, I have encountered a significant obstacle. Due to the bureaucratic challenges in renewing our driver’s licenses, myself and thousands of fellow Ukrainians are at risk of losing our ability to drive to work, attend school, and carry on with our daily lives.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has confirmed that Ukrainians under TPS retain their protections, including work authorization, while awaiting further announcements. However, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is not recognizing these directives, leaving many of us stranded and worried about our future. Without the ability to renew our driver’s licenses, our jobs and our families' wellbeing are under severe strain.

It is critical to understand that the conflict in Ukraine persists, making it unsafe for us to return. We are not asking to be treated any differently than others; rather, we are seeking the fair application of existing guidelines so that we can continue to contribute positively to our communities.

Our livelihoods depend on our ability to drive. As we pursue work and educational opportunities, we need valid licenses to legally and safely travel across Ohio. This is not merely an inconvenience; it is a barrier to survival and personal growth.

Governor Mike DeWine, we urge you to take immediate action and direct the Ohio BMV to align their procedures with USCIS guidance. By doing so, you can prevent unnecessary hardship for thousands of individuals and families who are committed to building their lives here.

Please stand with us and support this call for justice and equity. Sign this petition to ensure fair treatment and respect the rights of Ukrainians living under TPS in Ohio.
