Digitize UM Cane Cards
The Issue
I'm frustrated with the outdated system at the University of Miami, where students are still burdened with physical Cane Cards for identification and access. As a student, I’ve experienced the unnecessary inconveniences firsthand. I’ve been locked out of my dorm room more times than I can count simply because I misplaced my card after a long day of classes. It’s not just me. I see many of my peers facing the same disaster. We're exhausted from the hassle a simple digital solution could easily resolve.
Many reputable institutions have already transitioned to digital ID cards, offering their students seamless access and a reduction in daily frustrations. Digital ID cards can be integrated into smartphones, which almost every student carries. We will no longer worry about losing a small piece of plastic. We can easily scan our phones to enter buildings, check out books from the library, or access meals—streamlining our campus experience.
In fact, implementing digital Cane Cards will not only reduce the frequency of lock-outs but will also enhance security on campus. Digital IDs can be revoked or updated swiftly without the need to issue new physical cards, protecting students from potential security risks associated with lost or stolen cards. Moreover, going digital aligns with the university’s sustainability goals by reducing plastic waste.
It's high time the University of Miami embraced technology to make our lives easier and more efficient. We call upon the university administration to prioritize implementing a digital system for Cane Cards immediately. We need to modernize our campus and catch up with other educational institutions. This change will simplify our daily lives, increase our security, and demonstrate our university’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Please join me in urging the University of Miami to digitize our Cane Cards. Sign this petition to bring about necessary change and improve our student experience.
