Digital Threat, Natural Cost: Save Hawkins County's Endagered Species From Crypto Mining
Digital Threat, Natural Cost: Save Hawkins County's Endagered Species From Crypto Mining
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens of Hawkins County, Tennessee, respectfully petition our local and federal authorities to prevent the construction of the proposed crypto mining facility by Exotic Ridge in Bulls Gap. Our county commissioners have made every effort to support the will of the people by voting in favor of a county-wide ban on crypto mining—a decision made in direct response to the concerns of our community. Despite these efforts, Exotic Ridge is attempting to use the lack of formal zoning laws as a loophole, pursuing legal action to force the facility’s construction against the clear wishes of Hawkins County residents.
Most people may not realize that Bulls Gap is home to three endangered species of bats ( Gray Bat, Indiana Bat, and the Northern Long Eared Bat) as well as several species of endangered aquatic life of mussels and fish from water running through Bulls Gap to the Holston River Watershed ( The Purple Bean, Tennessee Heelsplitter, and the Spotfin Chub). All of these are protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which requires any project that may impact these species to comply with strict federal regulations. The presence of these vulnerable animals means that building the crypto mining facility could disrupt delicate ecosystems and potentially violate federal law, putting our natural heritage at grave risk.
The extraordinary diversity of wildlife in Hawkins County is not only a source of local pride but also a rare treasure on a national scale. It is uncommon for a single region to host such a high concentration of endangered species, making our community uniquely significant in the fight to preserve America’s natural legacy. Any disturbance to the delicate habitats and ecosystems that support these species could have irreversible consequences—potentially wiping them out forever and leaving future generations without the chance to experience their wonder. Protecting these animals means safeguarding a piece of the Earth's intricate web of life, a responsibility we cannot take lightly.
Our primary goal is to stop the construction of the crypto mining facility outright, protecting our community and its irreplaceable environment. Should the court ultimately allow Exotic Ridge to move forward, our secondary goal is to ensure that, at a minimum, the company is required to comply fully with all ESA criteria before breaking ground. This includes obtaining an Incidental Take Permit and developing a Habitat Conservation Plan—measures designed to mitigate any harm to endangered species and their habitats.
I call on our neighbors, friends, and leaders to unite in upholding Hawkins County’s values and lawful protections.
By signing this petition, you are helping ensure that any development in our community not only reflects the will of its people but also honors the requirements set forth by state and federal law. Let’s work together to keep Bulls Gap a safe haven for its people and its wildlife.
