Digital Games Should Be Resellable — Give Players a Second-Hand Market
Kampanya metni
Physical games have always had one important advantage: when you're done with a game, you can sell it to someone else.
Digital games don't have to lose that value simply because there is no disc.
Today, when we purchase a digital game, we are generally told that we are not buying ownership of the game itself, but a license to use it.
If that's the case, why can't that license be transferred to another player?
We are asking major digital gaming platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, Steam and others to create an official digital second-hand marketplace.
Imagine a simple system:
- You buy a game for $70.
- You play it for months and eventually stop playing.
- You sell or transfer your digital license through the platform for $30–40.
- Another player gets the game at a lower price.
- You recover part of your money and can use it to buy another game.
The platform could charge a small transaction fee, while publishers could receive a fair share.
Everyone gets something.
Players get more value from their purchases. New players get access to games at more affordable prices. Publishers and platforms create additional transactions and potentially gain new customers.
It could even strengthen subscription services such as PlayStation Plus. A player who sells one game may use the money to purchase another, while the new owner could become a new customer and potentially subscribe to additional services.
Digital should not mean disposable.
As the industry moves increasingly toward digital-only distribution, consumers are losing one of the biggest advantages of physical games: residual value.
Once you finish a digital game, your purchase can effectively become worth nothing to you. That discourages some players from buying games at full price and makes digital purchases feel like a one-way transaction.
We are not asking for unlimited account sharing or piracy. We are asking for a controlled, secure and regulated digital second-hand market, with safeguards against fraud, appropriate transfer limits, waiting periods and fair compensation for publishers and platforms.
If digital games are the future, let's build a future that works for both players and the industry.
Sign this petition if you believe digital game licences should have a legitimate way to be transferred or resold.
Let's give digital games a second life.
