Life is so precious. According to studies conducted by a professor at Stony Brook University on Long Island, New York, living creatures are important to our ecosystem and in fact, have consciousness.  (Worral, National Geographic). These studies prove that animals such as chimpanzees, dolphins, and elephants are intellectual animals who are capable of making connections and decisions that impact their everyday life.  Each individual animal deserves to live in an ecosystem that is beneficial for them and their species. Animals, especially wild animals, are rounded up and used as test subjects. Animals are tested for many reasons, for example human studies, the makeup industry, and body lotions. Usually when these animals are being tested on they are treated as objects who don't have any emotions. As a result of these experiments, we have a huge number of animals imprisoned or died. Together, we must abolish all animal testing on a national level in order for them to be free, the way they deserve to live. They, too, want to live a peaceful and cruelty free life.

Animals have always been treated as less than and it is time to realize that should not be the case. These creatures have been collected in large amounts in order to be used for testing. Companies use the animals so they can test out their products or medicine. Scientists are not going to create  new medication and automatically distribute it to the public without knowing the side effects it may cause. Scientists, for a fact, test on rats and monkeys in lab rooms by injecting or feeding them the medications created. Unfortunately, there are times where these animals die due to either an overdose or the fatality of the medication. According to the Washington Post, there was a recent article published by Lateshia Beachum, titled “Rats are capable of driving tiny cars, researchers found. It eases their anxiety,”  in which she discussed a recent discovery where  rats are capable of driving miniature cars. The purpose of this experiment was to be able to “understand and connect anxiety and depression in humans,” which suggests that they most likely conducted numerous tests in order for the rats to successfully learn to drive the cars. The process can be painful for the animal. Rats are animals that should not be trained to things of this nature, it is not normal. They are rodents that deserve to live their lives freely. I understand that we test out medicine for a greater cause, but animals are constantly going through pain that I know a human would never want to endure.

Another example of animal testing for medicine is in the article, “Animal Testing and Medicine,” published by US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health where they state:

Claude Bernard, known as the father of physiology, stated that “experiments on animals are entirely conclusive for the toxicology and hygiene of man. The effects of these substances are the same on man as on animals, save for differences in degree.

This signifies that they don’t care for the life of the animals, in a way, saying, “better them than a human life.” They do this for humans and our safety, but there are definitely other  ways of testing the unknown.

Cosmetic companies also use animals to test out new makeup products. Brands such as, Benefit, Maybelline Cosmetics, and Estée Lauder continue to test their makeup on animals, which has affected their brand over the years. When a new eyeshadow is created, obviously these makeup companies want to make sure it doesn't cause an infection or, worst case scenario make the consumer blind. In order to avoid that they use these innocent animals and test the makeup on them, better them than us right? This should not be the case especially if we have other alternative methods. To this day, many of these companies are still using these techniques to further research and develop several other cosmetics. Just like there are companies that are guilty of continuing to  use this outdated method of testing, there are several that have moved on from that “old-fashioned” way. A way we can stop these companies is also having people boycott them and refuse to use their products. People can use alternative brands such as, E.LF., Wet n Wild, and Smashbox. These brands carry the same products, however they don’t harm these precious animals.

One of the biggest companies leading the direction of not using animals for testing is Bath & Body Works. The products sold at these stores contains chemicals that can be greatly harmful to the consumer, however they still get their products tested, just in a different way that doesn’t put the animal’s life in danger. As stated on their custom care website,

“Bath & Body Works does not test and of our branded products, formulations or ingredients on animals… Our company continues to support the Institute for InVitro Sciences (IIVS)- a non-profit research and testing laboratory dedicated and regular acceptance of non-animal methods.”

It continues in detailing that their ultimate goal is to eliminate animal testing worldwide and to collaborate with the Chinese government to “assist them in adopting non-animal methods”. This comes to show that there is really no need to hurt animals of any kind to increase profit. Collaborating and investing into an alternative is the future’s best way of  doing what is best for our world to move forward. According to the organization, PETA, alternatives include testing on “human cells and tissues, also known as the Virto Methods.” I understand that this can extend the process of releasing the products into the world, but it will be done in a harm free way. Harvard’s Wyss Institute explains that they have, “created “organs-on-chips” that contain human cells, and those cells will react to the substances just as our bodies would. Another alternative is Computer (in silico) Modeling. Nowadays, with modern technology, “what can’t we do?” is the real question? Computer modeling “simulates human biology and the progression of developing diseases,” (PETA). The models will be used rather than animals and you will still get the same results. They can predict how new substances affect us humans. These alternatives make the process longer, however it is better for it to be longer than having an animal in excruciating pain for hours ongoing. It is not fair.

If we continue to use and abuse these animals they will go extinct and it will affect both them and our ecosystems. We must make a change now! We must establish a national ban on animal testing because it is unjustified since there are several other methods. With this petition I urge us as a community to sign it and aim for 700,000 signatures. I hope we can all rise together and be an advocate for these creatures. Let’s make animal testing extinct!!!
