Diabetes Doesn’t Rest. Make diabetes a priority in Victoria’s 2026 election.
The issue
For people living with diabetes, managing the condition is an everyday responsibility. Support should be there when they need it.
No child should miss out on early childhood education because they have diabetes. No person should face prolonged waits for the specialist care they need. And no community should be overlooked when it comes to prevention, early intervention and better treatment.
Ahead of Victoria’s November 2026 state election, we are calling on all political parties to publicly commit to Diabetes Victoria’s five election priorities, and on the next Victorian Government to fund and deliver them.
We are asking for action in five areas:
1. Support healthier futures
Introduce a healthy pregnancies program within routine maternity care and expand the Life! program and public awareness campaigns to reach Victoria’s diverse communities.
2. Act earlier
Establish community programs for early detection, intervention and type 2 diabetes remission, prioritising groups with the greatest need. Improve timely access to insulin pump therapy.
3. Improve access and quality of care
Reduce specialist waiting times through new models of diabetes care. Establish a Diabetes Learning Health Network to improve standards across the health system.
4. Include every child
Set clear requirements for supporting children with diabetes in early childhood education and care. Fund a dedicated program to help services include children safely and confidently.
5. Invest in research and innovation
Strengthen funding for independent diabetes research institutes, establish research fellowships and accelerate the translation of research into clinical care.
Bring these commitments together in a Victorian Diabetes Plan.
The next Victorian Government should develop this plan with people affected by diabetes, Diabetes Victoria, health professionals and researchers, with clear responsibilities, delivery timeframes and public reporting.
People living with diabetes deserve commitments they can see translated into action.
By signing this petition, you are asking Victoria’s political leaders to make diabetes prevention, care, inclusion and research a priority in the 2026 election and throughout the next term of government.
