DHS, TSA: Provide optional bulletproof vests to Transportation Security Officers
This petition had 20,528 supporters
In light of the events on November 1st, 2013 where Gerardo I. Hernandez was killed in the line of duty at Los Angeles International Airport protecting the Nation's transportation systems as an Officer for TSA; we must be honest and about how dangerous the job of an Officer for TSA can be. Officers are verbally and physically harassed on a daily basis and though we have diligently and effectively protected our nation for eleven years, we have had very little protection for ourselves.
This petition is to request the option of a bulletproof vest as part of our uniform. Adding this option to VF Solutions and allowing any Officer who wants to wear one, the ability to use their uniform allotment toward purchasing a vest. A bulletproof vest may not be a cure or a whole solution to the problem, but for many Officers and their families, it would be a welcome relief; A peace of mind knowing that the chance to come home safe is a priority.
Providing these vests for any Officer who deals directly with the public would go a long way towards our core mission of providing the most effective transportation security in the most efficient way, and it would begin to elevate us and our image as a high performing counter terrorism organization.
We are wanting the same safety precautions that are afforded to every other Officer who puts their lives in harms way daily. Please Support this petition and help us move toward making these Officers feel safe from harm from what is now a realized threat. Thank You.
