In a recent article by The Advocate, Devonport Warriors President Leanne Webb acknowledged the possibility of a rebrand as the team prepares to move into their new $60 million facility. While discussions about a new logo have begun, no official decisions have been made, and the use of the current Native American chieftain logo remains under debate. Webb stated that while the logo has been part of the club’s identity for over seven decades, the club is open to change, saying, "We'd certainly be sensitive to the fact if it was offensive."

However, Webb’s comments show a clear lack of understanding and nuance on the global issue of using Indigenous peoples as mascots. Statements like, "We just believe the Warrior logo, and what a Warrior stands for and means, describes our club perfectly," and, "We've had discussions with Basketball Tasmania about it, and there's nothing we can find legally that prevents us from still having the logo," miss the larger point of cultural respect and inclusivity. The issue isn't just about legality or tradition—it’s about recognising that using Indigenous imagery for entertainment or branding perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reduces entire cultures to caricatures.

This is a crucial moment for us to push for meaningful change! Now, more than ever, we need your help to spread the word and raise awareness. If you’ve already signed the petition, please share it with your networks. Together, we can encourage the club to adopt a name and logo that respects all cultures and reflects the values of inclusivity and diversity.
