"Devon's Law: Protect Lives with Smarter Seat Belts"

"Devon's Law: Protect Lives with Smarter Seat Belts"
The Issue
Tragically, my son Devon was recently killed in a car accident because he was not wearing his seat belt. Driving at high speed, he lost control and was thrown from his vehicle – a heartbreaking reality that no parent should ever face. As a mother, it shatters me to know Devon will never experience so many of life’s milestones. He will never marry, never become a father or grandfather, never own his first home – so many firsts, stolen in an instant.
In Devon's memory, we propose "Devon's Law." This mandate would require all vehicles to be equipped with seat belts integrated with advanced sensors, similar in principle to breathalyzer ignition devices. These sensors would prevent a vehicle from starting unless the driver is wearing their seat belt. If the seat belt is removed while driving, the system would automatically reduce the car’s speed to 25 miles per hour, drastically lowering the risk of fatal ejections.
To ensure proper functioning and safety, annual inspections of these devices would be required for vehicle registration renewal and all private person-to-person vehicle sales. Compliance would be tracked in a centralized database, ensuring transparency and accountability. These inspections would guarantee the sensors remain operational and effective, creating a consistent standard for all vehicles on the road.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45% and serious injury by 50%. Yet, as of 2019, 7 out of 100 adults still did not wear their seat belts on every trip (CDC). Devon's Law could change this, dramatically increasing compliance and saving countless lives.
We believe the technology exists to prevent other families from enduring the devastating loss we have suffered. Help us honor Devon’s memory and protect future generations. Sign this petition and urge lawmakers to make "Devon's Law" a reality.
