E-bike and e-scooter injuries and deaths are on the rise, with a 21% increase in injuries between 2021 and 2022, and at least 233 deaths associated with micromobility devices from 2017 to 2022.

The number of deaths associated with micromobility devices (including e-bikes and e-scooters) has also been rising.

Specific Numbers:

  • At least 233 deaths were associated with micromobility devices from 2017 to 2022.
  • A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that injuries increased from 3,500 in 2017 to 24,400 in 2022.
  • E-bike injuries doubled annually, from 750 recorded in 2017 to 23,500 in 2022.
E-scooter injuries rose from 8,566 to 56,847 over that timeframe.

Factors Contributing to Injuries:

  • Lack of Safety Regulations: A lack of safety regulations, such as mandatory helmets, speed limits, and age restrictions, may contribute to increased injuries.
  • Risky Behaviors: Electric bike and scooter riders were older and more likely to participate in risky behaviors, such as riding while intoxicated and riding without a helmet than conventional vehicle riders.
