The Issue

In 2004, the City of Olympia purchased the land now known as 8th Ave Park for over $500,000 with the intention of preserving it as a public space for the community to enjoy. More than 20 years later, that vision still has not become a reality. Despite its natural beauty and potential to serve as a gathering place for residents, families, and visitors, the park remains undeveloped and inaccessible to the public.

For two decades, this valuable piece of land has sat unused while the surrounding community continues to grow and the need for accessible outdoor spaces becomes increasingly important. What was meant to be a shared community asset has instead become a missed opportunity — a beautiful area that the public cannot fully experience or benefit from as originally intended.

This petition calls on the City of Olympia to take meaningful action toward developing and opening 8th Ave Park for public use. Our community deserves safe, accessible green spaces that reflect the purpose for which this land was purchased and the promises made when it was acquired.
