Manitoba’s population is heavily concentrated in its capital city, Winnipeg—Canada’s sixth-largest city with a population of 749,607 and the eighth-largest metropolitan area at 834,678 as of 2021. Situated merely 100 kilometers from the U.S. border, Winnipeg serves as the province’s dominant urban center, leaving the vast majority of Manitoba’s expansive 647,797 km² territory—particularly its northern region—sparsely populated. Despite a total provincial population of 1,342,153, northern Manitoba remains underdeveloped, despite its significant natural resource wealth and strategic geographic position.

To ensure long-term sustainability, equitable economic growth, and national territorial resilience, it is imperative for both Manitoba and Canada to prioritize the strategic utilization of this underleveraged land. Northern development must be at the forefront of planning efforts—not only to unlock resource potential, but also to strengthen domestic production capacity and diversify trade channels.

A promising sign of this shift occurred during the recent visit of European diplomats to Manitoba, exploring trade development opportunities through the northern sea route. As highlighted in a CBC report, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew’s openness to exploring a second Hudson Bay port signals a pivotal move toward enhancing trade with Europe—a much-needed step amidst ongoing trade uncertainties with the United States. In my petition, the selection of Thompson as a pilot regional city for development is a deliberate and strategic proposal. Positioned in Manitoba’s north, Thompson is uniquely suited to become a modern manufacturing and production hub, leveraging the region's abundant natural resources and positioning Canada to thrive in a more multipolar global trade environment, to be enhanced by an all season port, in addition to existing summer month Port of Churchill in the Hudson Bay.

Developing new regional cities such as Thompson is not just a provincial initiative—it is a national imperative for economic diversification, territorial integration, and sustainable prosperity.
