In response to the incident of police violence against protesters which occurred around 9:30pm at Vernor Hwy. and Waterman St. during the Southwest Solidarity Rally and March, we, the organizers, release the following statement to our communities:

On Sunday, June 28th, community members and representatives from 34 organizations and over 400 participants came together to unequivocally say that Black Lives Matter. A rally was held in Patton Park with diverse speakers who highlighted the intersectional ways in which police brutality, immigration enforcement, environmental racism, inequitable education, and other systemic issues that harm our communities and uphold white supremacy. It was a beautiful expression of solidarity and a unified call to action to end the racist and oppressive exertions of power and violence against our people. After the rally, we marched through our neighborhood from Patton Park to Clark Park where we continued to chant for justice calling for a response to the demands brought forward during the last 31 days of protests in Detroit. 

As the day's events evolved, there were multiple occurrences where aggressive behaviours attempting to dominate the will of those congregated were exhibited by Detroit police officers. When the event concluded at Clark Park individuals attempted to head back to their vehicles. 

Based on community knowledge, the safest route had been pre-determined prior to Sunday’s event, and it was intentionally disrupted by the police. Our coalition had our own escorts and emergency plans to keep participants safe.

Upon arriving at Vernor and Waterman, DPD had barricaded the route and began using their vehicles as weapons to block and disperse protestors. The police claim to exist to “protect & serve” but what we saw was the opposite: they endangered and harmed various community members. This could have easily resulted in another unnecessary loss of life, as in the cases of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others. Although we are relieved that did not occur, we consider the officers actions to be reckless at best, and intentionally violent at worst. 

Opposing injustice is our right and our duty.

We will not be intimidated.

This movement seeks to end all forms of police brutality.

We denounce the Detroit Police Department and demand that the officer who unnecesarily accelerated into the crowd be immediately fired and that other officers involved be suspended without pay while a thorough, transparent investigation of all video, photo, and eyewitness testimony is conducted. Those who are directly responsible for this heinous act must be held accountable for their actions. 

The negation of any wrongdoing and misrepresentation of events by Chief Craig will not sway our resolve. 

Southwest Detroit will continue to stand with Black Lives Matter and organize in OUR streets.

En respuesta al incidente de violencia policial en contra los manifestantes que ocurrió alrededor de las 9:30 pm en Vernor Hwy. y Waterman St. durante La Manifestación y Protesta de Solidaridad en Southwest, nosotros, los organizadores, publicamos la siguiente declaración a nuestras comunidades:

El domingo 28 de junio, miembros de la comunidad y representantes de 34 organizaciones y más de 400 participantes se convocaron para decir inequívocamente que Las Vidas Negras Importan. Se realizó una manifestación en Patton Park con diversos oradores que destacaron las formas interseccionales en que la brutalidad policial, la aplicación de las leyes de inmigración, el racismo ambiental, la desigual en nuestros sistemas educacionales y otros problemas sistémicos que dañan a nuestras comunidades y defienden la supremacía blanca. Fue una hermosa expresión de solidaridad y un llamado a unificar nuestros esfuerzos para poner fin a las expresiones opresivas de poder y acciones violentas y racistas en contra de nuestro pueblo. Después de la manifestación, marchamos por nuestro vecindario desde Patton Park hasta Clark Park, donde seguimos exigiendo justicia pidiendo respuestas a las demandas presentadas durante los últimos 31 días de protestas en Detroit.

A medida que los eventos del día evolucionaron, hubo múltiples eventos en que los agentes policiales de Detroit exhibieron comportamientos agresivos que intentaban dominar la voluntad de aquellos que estaban congregados. Cuando el evento concluyó en Clark Park, individuos intentaron regresar a sus vehículos.

Según el conocimiento de la comunidad, la ruta más segura se había predeterminado antes del evento del domingo, y la policía la interrumpió intencionalmente. Nuestra coalición tenía  escoltas y planes de emergencia propios para mantener a los participantes a salvo.

Al llegar a Vernor y Waterman, DPD había bloqueado la ruta y comenzó a usar sus vehículos como armas para bloquear y dispersar a los manifestantes. La policía afirma que existe para "proteger y servir", pero lo que vimos fue lo contrario: nos pusieron en peligro y lastimaron a varios miembros de la comunidad. Esto fácilmente podría haber resultado en otra pérdida de vida, como en los casos de George Floyd, Breonna Taylor y muchos otros. 

Aunque estamos aliviados de que no haya ocurrido alguna muerte, consideramos que las acciones de los oficiales son temerarias en el mejor de los casos e intencionalmente violentas en el peor.

Oponerse a la injusticia es nuestro derecho y nuestro deber.

No seremos intimidados.

Este movimiento busca acabar con todas las formas de brutalidad policial.

Denunciamos al Departamento de Policía de Detroit y exigimos que el oficial que aceleró innecesariamente dentro de la multitud sea inmediatamente despedido y que otros oficiales involucrados sean suspendidos sin pago mientras se lleva a cabo una investigación exhaustiva y transparente de todos los videos, fotos y testimonios de testigos presenciales. 

Los que son directamente responsables de este acto atroz deben rendir cuentas por sus acciones.

La negación de cualquier mala conducta y falsificación de los eventos por parte del Jefe Policial Craig no influirá nuestra resolución.

El suroeste de Detroit continuará apoyando a Las Vidas Negras Importan y se organizará en NUESTRAS calles.
