Designate off-leash dog run areas in West Kaua’i parks
The Issue
Every dog deserves the joy of running free and socializing with their fellow canines. I recently adopted a senior dog from the Kaua’i Humane Society, and it's been heartwarming to watch him enjoy running and playing with other dogs. However, we live on the west side of Kaua’i, and the absence of a nearby dog park poses a significant challenge. Currently, we have to drive over 20 minutes to reach the nearest dog park which closes at 6 pm so we can only go during the weekends. Despite the existence of three dog parks on the island, none are conveniently located on the west side.
This situation is not just inconvenient for us but for many other dog owners in the area who have shared similar sentiments. Dogs are an integral part of our families, and their quality of life is deeply connected to their ability to exercise and interact socially.
Designating space in existing west Kaua’i County parks for off-leash dog run areas would promote community, enhance the well-being of our pets, and encourage responsible dog ownership. Studies have shown that off-leash areas in communities not only improve dogs' physical health but also reduce behavioral issues by providing ample opportunities for exercise and social interaction.
Moreover, community dog parks strengthen the bond among residents, creating a space where families, through their pets, can connect, share experiences, and support one another. Implementing off-leash areas in existing parks would require minimal investment, as it involves repurposing a section of current parks rather than developing new infrastructure.
Join me in urging Kaua’i County officials to take this important step forward. By signing this petition, you are supporting the creation of a healthier, happier community for both dogs and their owners on the west side of Kaua’i. Let's provide our pets the joy of play and the freedom of open spaces. Please sign and share this petition to make a change for our furry friends!
