Tiny update: a council member who wishes not to be named stated " the guidelines doesn't allow the splash pads to be open yet however they still think the mayor will continue having the Dsm park and rec keep them closed for the season."
The parks are open, kids are at play. Adults are at the bars,
During the Hot Iowa summers marginolized households rely on pools and places to cool down. Since the Des Moines park and rec has stated all pools and splash pads are closed for the season because they can not be socially distanced. This is the GOVERNOR and MAYORS CHOICE. WHEN THEY DISAGREE THE MAYOR OVER RULES IN SOME CASES.. THIS BEING ONE OF THEM However, the parks opened. Social distancing is a new norm with parks and we feel splash pads should have the same requirements.
Some of these parks are even set up with play centers such as the pirate ship park on Indianola Rd for spray. If we can social distance at a park that is not sanitized we can do the same to keep these families safe and cool while giving these kids something to do this summer while also keeping our own families mental health somewhat sane. Its already starting to over crowd some areas do to the lack of options. Des Moines park and rec is following orders as they should, however we don't think this makes sense. We would like Mayor Cownie to reconsider under the same park guidelines.
