My visit to Pet Habitat in Metropolis at Metro Town in April 2015 is what prompted me to start this petition. As I took my first steps into the store, I was greeted by the unpleasant sight of a tank filled with lethargic kittens. My heart continued to sink as I walked through the puppy section. Each puppy was confined to a TINY cube with a few holes for ventilation, water from hamster bottles, strips of paper "bedding", and a small pan with a towel in it where the puppies were expected to urinate and defecate. Some puppies were also using their potty towels as toys, and anxiously chewing on the plastic pans because they were the only things in their cage that provided a little bit of entertainment.
A sign posted inside the Metro Town store and ensures "All puppies are allowed to play outside of their enclosures at least 3 times per day". With well over a dozen cubes of puppies I highly doubted this was true considering in the 30 minute time period when I was there, no new puppies were brought out of their enclosure - the math just didn't add up. And the puppies that were getting "play time" were only transferred to another enclosure with concrete floors and very little simulation for the active minded puppies. I observed one Labrador puppy, that I assumed was too big to fit in the cubes anymore, sitting in a bigger enclosure on his own chewing on the corner of his kennel out of boredom.
This sparked another question: what happens when the puppies grow up and aren't sold? I also wondered when the last time the poor animals had felt real grass beneath their paws or been able to enjoy real sunshine or a real walk with a human that cares about their well being.
Once I got home, I did some research on what other people thought about the place and came across a picture of a sign posted at the same Pet Habitat that ensured the puppies they sell come from a reputable source - Hunte Corporation. However, after reading this article: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Hunte_Corporation#USDA_.26_AKC_.22standards.22
, I was far from being convinced that this could be reputable distributor of puppies. What I got from the article, is that Hunte Corporation is nothing but a middle man between puppy mills and pet stores if not a massive puppy mill itself with low standards in terms of puppy health and quality of life.
Although puppy mills are the real problem at hand, shutting down one more pet store that supports the manufacturers and their cruel practices and continues the mistreatment of animals would be a huge step in the right direction.
So please, for the puppies, kittens and rabbits that are sitting in those little cages right now, sign this petition in hopes that mayor Derek Corrigan and Burnaby council will follow the lead of other Canadian cities and ban the sale of puppies, kittens, and rabbits in pet stores.
