The Issue

In 2018, a rookie truck driver named Jaskirat Singh Sidhu barrelled through a stop sign and into the path of the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team's bus at a rural intersection near Tisdale, Saskatchewan.

Sixteen young people on the bus were killed and 13 were injured. This tragedy has left an indelible mark on the families, friends, and communities of these vibrant young individuals who were taken from us far too soon. Each victim was more than just a hockey player; they were cherished sons, brothers, and friends, each with dreams that were shattered on that fateful day.

Sidhu pleaded guilty to dangerous driving offences and was sentenced to eight years in prison. After serving only three years, he was granted full parole in 2023.

In May 2024, he was ordered to be deported back to India at an Immigration and Refugee Board hearing. Despite being a permanent resident, the severity of his actions and impact of the crime were recognized and asserted by Canadian authorities.

However, Sidhu is appealing this decision. His lawyer Michael Greene said his client has applied to regain permanent resident status based on humanitarian grounds.

We, the signatories of this petition believe that allowing Jaskirat Singh Sidhu to remain in Canada diminishes the gravity of his actions and the irreparable loss experienced by the victims’ families.

Deporting this individual back to his country of origin is a necessary step to honour the victims and affirm the value of their lives. It is crucial for justice to be served, not only for those who tragically lost their lives but also for the safety and security of others who share our roads each day.

Canada's judicial system must uphold its principles and ensure that those who live within our borders respect and value life.

Sign this petition to support the deportation of Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, the driver responsible for this tragedy. Let us stand united in our demand for justice and public safety!
