Keep Clark Sage on DePauw's Faculty and Payroll

Keep Clark Sage on DePauw's Faculty and Payroll
The Issue
A liberal arts education celebrates and nurtures human freedom. Clark Sage’s classes encompass these values and more. Any student who has been enrolled in Sage’s courses understands his outstanding character and depth of knowledge about anthropology. Clark Sage has been a professor of Anthropology at DePauw University since 2015. The administration may not renew his contract. Clark Sage’s departure will be a huge loss to the DePauw community because we will be losing a true believer in education and truth-seeking.
Not only does he have a charismatic approach to teaching, he is accessible to every student that walks in his classroom. Clark Sage understands that knowledge serves values, and he strives to put these two—knowledge and values—into constant dialogue with each other in each class. Clark Sage is a character shaper. He cares about every student that walks through his door. He listens and guides you on a path of truth. Clark genuinely wants to know your story.
If Clark Sage's contract is not renewed, students will truly be losing an irreplaceable friend, professor, and asset to their education. Please don’t do this, DePauw.

“Clark Sage is the sole reason I stayed at DePauw when I felt like I couldn’t survive here. Not only do his students learn so much about the unique content he chooses to share with us, but we learn how to be compassionate in a world where hate surrounds us. I am eternally grateful for my four years with him as my advisor and to see him go would break my heart for the students who haven’t had the chance to experience his kindness.” -KM '21
"Professors like Clark Sage are hard to find. He’s the definition of an educator at heart. Clark Sage has been one of the best professors I’ve had at DePauw during my four years at DePauw. He truly cares about his students’ education, he’s there for his students when they need him, and his classroom/ office is always open to anyone. I first had Sage my freshman year second semester and he made sure his classroom was always a safe space for me and my classmates. He’s the reason why I decided to keep learning and exploring anthropology. Without him, I would have never considered minoring in Anthropology. I’ve learned so much for him and every semester I make sure to take a class with him because I’ve learned and grown so much from his classroom. Clark Sage is one of the best professors at DePauw and he shouldn’t be let go. The Anthropology department would experience a huge decline without him." -MH '21
“Sage taught me the importance of anthropology and how it can be applied to every single aspect of life. Without him, I wouldn't be the person I am today knowing so much about human culture.” -SH '21
“Professor Sage is someone I can always count on, no matter what the circumstances are. He has shown me how life was meant to be lived. Not allowing him to come back is not only an injustice to him and what he has done for the school, but also an injustice to the students. So many of us rely on him for a multitude of things and I simply cannot imagine DePauw without him.” -CG '21
“When I came to DePauw I felt really lost, I did not know what to study or even how to make friends on campus. Arguably the best thing to happen to me at DePauw was someone dropping out of Clark Sage’s Human Cultures class, I was able to take the last spot in the course. Sage has fundamentally changed my DePauw experience. He has created safe classrooms, where I have met the most amazing people, while learning the most amazing things. Sage teaches the kind of classes that when you call home and your parents ask about what you’re learning you seem to only be spewing out interesting things you learned in his classroom. He has taught me compassion, to be brave enough to sit with someone in a dark place, and is the one reason I would tell someone to attend DePauw University.” -KM '21
“I have taken 4 classes with Sage and I have learned more from him than in my 4 years at DePauw. He teaches you information you can use outside of the classroom and in your everyday life.” -KH '21
“I have taken three classes with Clark Sage. In those three classes Clark has taught me so many things. Most importantly Clark has taught me how to think subjectively, and think critically about any issues that might arise. As a future music educator Clark has taught me what it really means to care for your students. Clark is one of the few people I have ever met that truly has his students best interest in mind. I can say for certain my life would be very different if it weren’t for Clark Sage” -JT
