left hand drive cars in Australia for enthusiasts
The issue
Hi All,
I recently made an enquiry with the Canberra Department of Transport regarding vehicle imports from the USA. My enquiry was in regards to importing a vehicle from the USA for my own personal use.
I was advised that an individual can only import one vehicle every five (5)
years, but the age of the car is a contributing factor to what vehicles can be imported without requiring a Right Hand Drive (RHD) conversion.
If a car was manufactured pre 1989 it can be imported and not require a conversion from Left Hand Drive (LHD) to RHD to satisfy Australian registration requirements. However any car manufactured post 1989 is subjected to the LHD to RHD to enable Australian registration.
What I am seeking is discretionary approval from dotars on medical grounds to approve a post 1989 hence 2001 model and import and leave the car as LHD. I suffer from a left leg injury that has a affected my mobility drastically since my accident 3 years ago i have over thirty titanium screws in my foot and I walk with a limp.and can only walk for around thirty minutes before im in pain If I exit a vehicle on the right hand side it causes discomfort that is significantly reduced if I exit a vehicle on the left hand side.as the curb is easier to step down too
The vehicle I am attempting to import is a 2001 F series, which under normal circumstances would require the LHD to RHD conversion.through a registered approved workshop which would cost 48.000 dollars
However, with the abovementioned issues I am hoping the Minister will use his discretionary powers to approve my import request.
