I consider the grove of giant sequoias to be The Standing People, or The Tree Nation. The largest, eldest of them, recently saved from fire in California’s Sequoia Park, is named General Sherman. I feel this is a dishonor to the tree and a more fitting name should be chosen, partly out of respect for indigenous nations whom General Sherman systematically worked to wipe out with his campaign of Buffalo slaughter. Native peoples honored and respected nature and it’s time we took a lesson from them. I would propose asking native tribal communities to help find a more respectful name for this venerable tree. 
The Department of the Interior has an indigenous leader in Deb Haaland who should be sympathetic to the symbolism involved in using a name for the tree that belonged to a man who said, “ All Indians who cling to their old hunting grounds are hostile and will remain so till killed off.” Given the awareness of genocidal consequences towards native people by just such persons as General Sherman that has grown in recent times, I would like to appeal to the Department of the Interior to rename this tree in a more respectful manner.
