Werrington Kangaroos - It's Crunch Time
Friends, thank you for your past support of the mob of around 100 Kangaroos on the Werrington North campus of Western Sydney University (WSU). Your signing of our change,org petition has been encouraging and helpful.
Can we ask you to read this update and undertake a simple step, as indicated at the bottom of the update, to offer as little as a one-line expression of support for preserving the well-being and lives of the Kangaroos.
It has been some years to reach the point we are now at. WSU has partnered with the developer, Stockland, to lodge a development application with the NSW government.
The development application seeks to impose housing and other infrastructure on most of the open space land that has been foraging and habitat for Kangaroos for several decades.
The development application is now on exhibition and submissions are invited until 20 August 2026 – just under three (3) weeks from today.
Members of the public who have asked about the welfare of the Kangaroos receive a trite response from the development proponents to the effect of “a Kangaroo advisory committee was established and consulted the government and others about what to do about the Kangaroos”. One thing we are hearing is that translocation of the Kangaroos is not being pursued because the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service does not support translocation due a flimsy excuse that it causes distress to the animals.
It confounds most minds that slaughtering Kangaroos is a better welfare option than translocation, especially when there have been successful translocations on record in NSW and elsewhere in Australia.
It would be best for the Kangaroos to be permitted to have their existing habitat, foraging area, water and shade as presently exists. That is the peaceful existence they enjoy and it is the scene rail and road travellers identify as a “This is Australia Experience” after travelling west from the Sydney Central Business District and residential/industrial expanse which could otherwise be any other city in the world.
