Friends, once again I thank you for signing the petition to protect the mob of kangaroos at Werrington Park, Western Sydney.

Western Sydney University has been talking to people but not to us. Those with whom the university has been consulting have been meeting behind closed doors.

We are hearing that the killing of the kangaroos is firmly on the table of the people sought out by Western Sydney University to make a recommendation on the future of the kangaroos.

How has it come to this that Western Sydney University, an educational institution which sought the support of environmental organisations to gain international environmental accreditation in previous years, would degrade to destroying around 100 kangaroos because the university can derive financial benefit from destroying what has been the habitat of the kangaroos for several decades?

Could we trace the public and private ills, which infect our nation, to their source, I doubt not that we would find that most of them would proceed from a general neglect of the moral education students receive either in the lecture halls or by the actions (those silent sermons) of the hierarchy of our universities. Western Sydney University looks likely to demonstrate this point in totality.

Be in no doubt, in the formation of values which students will later express in decisions they make in civil life, it is the examples borne out of educational institutions that are the root of who they will become and how they act. If the students see that Western Sydney University, which is entrusted with their education, is more solicitous to educate them to material gain over moral piety and sensitivity they will soon learn that the latter is of little consequence and will throw it off. The world will be all the poorer for this.

Western Sydney University, your example must be either positively good or it will be positively bad. This mob of kangaroos at Werrington Park is a remnant of our natural heritage which you have nurtured for many years – until now. It is a remnant looked out for by train and car passengers, children and adult alike, as they pass by the site on their daily journey. To devolve to slaughter of the kangaroos to make a quick ‘buck’ is a steep descent into morality depravity and must not be entertained. It will bring great dishonour to Western Sydney University. Your institution will not, by any stretch, be a centre of excellence but will be remembered hereafter as the body which slaughtered kangaroos for a dollar and of no value to a sensitive world.
