Thank you for supporting protection of the mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos which have occupied, for decades, what has of late been called the Werrington Park Campus of Western Sydney University, NSW, Australia.
I would just like to give you a short update on the matter.
You may recall there are two issues of threat to the kangaroos. One is the future development plans on the greater portion (2/3rds of the land) by Western Sydney University (WSU). The other is the smaller (1/3rd of the land) which has been sold to a developer and Lend Lease has submitted a development proposal to Penrith City Council. The proposal is extensive in impact.
Since the last update there has been no change to the WSU situation. University representatives have indicated an intention to accommodate the kangaroos on its land holding and will consult with Blacktown & District Environment Group about that in the future.
The matter of the Lend Lease development (28ha) is with Penrith City Council and Council has informed us that it, too, has concerns about the future of kangaroos given the scope of the development plan. Council has made that known to Lend Lease. Ultimately, the decision of the Lend Lease proposal will be made by the Sydney West Central Planning Panel and not Council. Recommendations will be made to the Panel by Council but Council is also mindful that an existing zoning over the land makes development possible.
So, there you are, dear supporter of these kangaroos, we have a battle on two fronts but we battle on in hope of sustaining the presence of these kangaroos which are a much loved feature of the Penrith City landscape.
