There are three application in for new gas stations on the East End of St. Thomas. The reasons each gas station should not be approved are many and varied. Here are just some of them:

1) There is no community need. We have 32 gas stations on the 32 square mile island of St. Thomas. For comparison, there are 32 gas stations on the 82 square miles that make up St. Croix. There are 3 gas stations on the 19 miles that is St. John. The DCLA List of businesses registered to sell gasoline: https://secure.dlca.vi.gov/license/Asps/Search/SearchResultsnew.aspx?BusName&LocAddress&LicType&BusActivity&LicenseNo&Island&SearchText=gasoline&fbclid=IwAR2m7hv6dtDb3BAHr6qQIbzLKMutojKlCJs3eFh_GFfHOPMyIDXE2DsrYbU

2) The environment. Run off is a serious issue. Gas explosions happen (Bovoni 2017). Spills happen.

3) Economic sustainability: when these businesses tank (which they will with the insane amount of competition they have with SO many other gas companies), are the Virgin Islands going to be stuck with another set of rotting gas stations?

4) The future. The global trend has been green energy. How can these businesses morph with the changing times?

5) Land use. Our land is precious. It's small, and there is less and less space available - with increased buildings and derelict properties and gated communities. What are we leaving for our future generations of Virgin Islanders?

December 16, 2020 community members voiced their displeasure and disagreement in adding any new gas stations at the DPNR town meeting. Many more have sent emails to DPNR (Syed.syedali@dpnr.Vi.gov and cc your Senators).
