PHILIPPINES TOWARDS PROGRESS: NO TO UNEMPLOYMENT

The Issue

As much as the group wants to tackle the still unresolved problem of poverty in the Philippines, we cannot simply suggest ways on how to deal with a difficulty of such complexity without addressing its root. Aside from high population growth and a lacking agriculture sector, main causes of poverty include unemployment and low job quality

Our country is well on its way towards industrialization and globalization. So why is there still a huge number of jobless citizens?

We have thought of some ways to somehow settle unemployment. Some employers think that underage citizens and those who are and beyond 60 years of age are unemployable. It is true that a person's age, in a way, gives people an idea of how physically and mentally capable one is. But it is not the sole determiner of whether they are fit for a job or not. It seems reasonable for employers to accept applicants as long as they are knowledgeable about the job they're applying for regardless of their age.

In the same way, education should not define a person. It is truly important for one to be a college graduate when applying for high-end jobs, but there are professions which do not require a diploma. Careers involving arts and craftsmanship, like weaving and the like, only entail skill, patience, and dedication. The government could hold seminars regarding said jobs so as to train uneducated yet qualified individuals.

An unjust thing that's occurring in the working society is that some companies and employers, instead of making their employees regulars after their first six months, remove them for their posts and demand them to renew their contract just so they wouldn't receive their benefits. This should not be the case. Regularization of an employee after six months should become mandatory.

Lastly, the government should implement projects and find new methods on how to attract more foreign investors to create more job opportunities for those idle citizens.

Unemployment is only one of the problems that our country faces; but once rectified, can be the cause of our country's booming progress.
