Laquan McDonald was murdered by ex-Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke. He was subsequently tried in state court and sentenced to only 6 years in state prison. He is eligible to be released from an Illinois State penitentiary after only serving 3 years. The Department of Justice opened up a federal criminal probe in 2015 where a federal grand jury heard weighted evidence involving the shooting. The investigation was paused when former President Donald Trump was elected. The then district US Attorney of the Northern District of Illinois resigned and was replaced after with newly acting US Attorney John Lausch who was installed under the Trump administration. Under title 18 U.S.C., Section 242 Van Dyke can be federally prosecuted and there is no statue of limitation for his crime.
