Arrest George Zimmerman

Now that the Department of Justice has taken on Trayvon Martin's case, I am updating the goal of this petition.Trayvon's mother, Sabrina Fulton, has said that she cannot eat or sleep until Zimmerman is arrested. My goal is that we make Sabrina's hungry days and sleepless nights as short as possible.

So far I have tried to be as objective as I can in forming this petition, however Zimmerman's claim of self-defense just doesn't hold water. Zimmerman, a man in his late 20's weighing approximately 240 pounds and armed with a 9mm handgun, confronted and killed Trayvon, an unarmed 17 year old weighing 140 pounds who was just trying to get home. Such a person does not belong free to roam the streets; he has proven himself to be a lethal threat to his community. That he is still free is an outrage, most of all to Trayvon's family and loved ones, but also to the whole community. Whose child will he find "suspicious" next?

              -------------------------------------------------------------------

On February 26th of this year, Trayvon Martin, 17 of Miami, Florida, was walking from a convenience store to his father's house when he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman, a man in his late 20's and captain of the local Neighborhood Watch, called 911 to report a suspicious person. Zimmerman was allegedly advised by the dispatcher not to pursue Trayvon and that a squad car was on the way, but when police arrived Trayvon had been shot and killed. Trayvon was unarmed, only carrying a can of ice tea and a packet of candy intended for his little brother. Zimmerman was in possession of a 9mm handgun.

Zimmerman was not arrested. The police told Trayvon's family that Zimmerman had a clean record, so no further action would be taken. This claim by police is false, as Zimmerman did in fact have a record of violence. Trayvon's family is demanding the release of the 911 call, and reports say the Sanford police will release it next week.

There is no way that we can change what happened; an innocent young man was taken from his family and friends. But we can stand up for justice, for Trayvon, his family, and our community. I am asking that law enforcement reconsider their position on George Zimmerman, a man who took the law into his own hands and killed an innocent young man.
