Stop the destruction of Canberra's oldest houses and suburbs

Stop the destruction of Canberra's oldest houses and suburbs
The issue
Canberra has only been around for little more than a century, and already the government is approving the demolition of old houses in Canberra's oldest suburbs. The center and inner North were one of the first urbanized districts in the young territory, and now much of it is being torn down, with around two side by side houses being replaced with up to 3 apartments on a single block. This maximizes the profit of companies, but what is the community left with? Plain, characterless boxes, and a town with no roots, and no trace of it's history.
Canberra's oldest housing only dates back to the 1920's, so why do developers see the need to take away the charm of Canberra? What will visitors see? They will see a political city of plain buildings, and will probably continue onto the popular 'heritage' cities of Sydney and Melbourne, which retain the originality and architecture of the era they were built in. Canberra hasn't got the luxury of age and history, and at this pace, never will.
So ACT Government, it is shameful that while other states and territories are fighting to restore old buildings, you are recklessly approving the destruction of our city's heritage. It is about time we stop this, and start preserving what is left.
