By signing this petition, you are calling on the Department of Health, the Presidency of South Africa and the South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (SATRA)  to reassess the harmful effects of 5G roll out on human and environmental health.

The severe health implications of 5G exposure include nueropsychiatric disorders, cancer, a break down of DNA, and infertility (Martin L. Pall, PhD, 2018). Despite an appeal by 180 scientists and doctors from 36 countries, 5G roll out in China, Japan, Germany, South Korea and the United States is rendering billions of people involuntary exposed to harmful electromagnetic radiation. In early 2020, Vodacom Chief Executive Shameel Joosub announced the service providers plans to roll out 5G in South Africa. 

In Europe, scientists have submitted the following statement to the European Union Commission with an urgent appeal stop the roll out of 5G until further investigations are made into its negative effects. 

“We, the undersigned scientists, recommend a moratorium on the roll-out of the fifth generation, 5G, for telecommunication until potential hazards for human health and the environment have been fully investigated by scientists independent from industry. 5G will substantially increase exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) on top of the 2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi etc. for telecommunications already in place. RF-EMF has been proven to be harmful for humans and the environment.”

Liquid Telecom announced in January 2020, it was building a wholesale 5G network that would be available from early 2020, using its share of the 3.5 GHz spectrum required for 5G. In light of the Covid 19 spread in South Africa, Vodacom CEO made the following statement - “We are making sure that our network can handle the additional demand so that people and businesses can work seamlessly from home and that we continue to deliver world-class connectivity to critical national infrastructure, government departments, businesses - both big and small - and our 44 million customers”. 

The radical social distancing recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is critical in slowing down the spread of the virus. However, the pressure it is putting on IT infrastructure, as more and more people are asked to work from home (and shift operations online) has the potential to legitimize the global roll out of 5G. 

This petition calls for an independent review of the health implications of 5G on the health and well-being of South Africans. The Covid 19 pandemic has shown us the fragility of the human race, it’s infrastructures and health systems. Let’s learn from this and put a stop to another attack on human health - 5G.
