The Issue

Lifestyle diseases are killing us! According to a 2008 study by the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute, a quarter of adult Filipinos are already hypertensive and 7 million are diagnosed with diabetes, making the Philippines one of the world’s top ten epicenters of the disease. Each year, 200,000 Filipinos die of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with heart diseases and diabetes as the leading causes of death. This is a man-made disaster!

There is a sustainable, affordable and accessible solution to this menace. The World Health Organization issued a Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health in 2002 that promotes the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables to combat these lifestyle diseases. Recently, the US Dietary Guidelines emphasized that: “A dietary pattern higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods is more health promoting and is associated with lesser environmental impact than is the current average US diet.”  Our consumption of fruits and vegetables  is outrageously lower than the recommended 9 to 13 servings a day.

Filipinos are eating more chicken at an average of 25 grams per day in 2008, up from 7 grams in 1978. Filipinos also ate an average of 58 grams of meat products a day in 2008, up by 152 percent from 23 grams in 1978!

May we respectfully request your offices to exercise its full control to regulate the marketing and advertisements of meat products. For a start, please get the Sexy Chix advertisement off the air and other media. The public needs to be protected from false and deceptive advertisements that glamorizes the consumption of meat and dairy.

Allow us to reiterate Article 110 of REPUBLIC ACT NO. 7394 THE CONSUMER ACT OF THE PHILIPPINES: "It shall be unlawful for any person to disseminate or to cause the dissemination of any false, deceptive or misleading advertisement by Philippine mail or in commerce by print, radio, television, outdoor advertisement or other medium for the purpose of inducing or which is likely to induce directly or indirectly the purchase of consumer products or services."

We are looking forward to your speedy and favorable action to this petition. It can also help save the lives of mothers who die of hypertension during pregnancy.  We can lower the maternal mortality rate by as much as 35% if we pour more resources on promoting a healthy diet among them.
