Improve the Air Quality of Ahmeek-- Stop Neuvokas From Violating R336.1901 (b)!

The Issue

On August 10, 2021, Neuvokas was cited for violating R336.1901(b), Air Contaminant or Water Vapor; Prohibition. This violation notice was given after numerous complaints to EGLE by Ahmeek and Ahmeek Location residents subsequent to years of ongoing emissions of strong, acrid odors interfering with normal outdoor life.

Some residents with asthma and other breathing issues have noticed an exacerbation of diminished lung capacity when outdoors, breathing in the odor. Others have been compelled to stay indoors with their windows shut to escape the pungent odor emanating from Neuvokas.

Local residents, who have chosen to live in the area, were drawn to it by the innate beauty of its outdoors, as well as by the fresh air. However, with the inception of Neuvokas, the ability to enjoy and interact with the environment has been greatly diminished.

Neuvokas was given 21 calendar days to address and remediate the violation, which was cited in a notice from EGLE dated Dec. 8, 2021. However, as of this date, December 20, 2022, the odor has not been mitigated. The odor is still strong enough to be carried at least a mile radius away. In addition, Neuvokas has recently begun an expansion project to their facility.

If the emitted odor is not eliminated, residents with breathing issues will continue to suffer, and we will not be able to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the location in which we live and work.
