The Philippines is a home to several natural wonders— may it be a form of land or water. One of these breathtaking creations is the country's longest mountain range, the Sierra Madre. Known as the “backbone of Luzon,” the Sierra Madre mountain range stretches from Cagayan to Quezon, covering up 10 provinces and almost 1.4 million hectares of rainforest. Its enormous territory holds the Philippines' largest and most biodiverse forest which shelters several wildlife species and accommodates some indigenous people. Aside from its diverse wildlife sanctuary and its great length spanning 500 km, Sierra Madre is called the “backbone of Luzon” since it serves as a natural shield against typhoons and storm surges. Sierra Madre protects Luzon Island's northeast coast, acting as a natural barrier against typhoons from the Pacific Ocean and protecting over 50 million lives in our country. The range also includes several watersheds serving the neighboring Central Luzon and Cagayan Valley agricultural lands. It promotes significant facilities, including irrigation dams, water utilities and power plants that serve urban settlements, including Metro Manila. The purposes, carried out by the Sierra Madre mountain range, are undoubtedly beneficial for everyone. However, it has always been human activities that pose threat to nature. Activities, such as deforestation, mining, and the building of various infrustructures, legal or not, are continuously damaging the mountains, hence slowly chipping away the functionality of the Sierra Madre. Laws regarding the protection of several nature reserves are existing. Although they are guarded by body of laws, these sites are not actually protected, and shameless illegal logging and mining are still prevalent.

The Philippine government additionally proposed the Kaliwa Dam construction in the Sierra Madre location. Even if its main purpose is to reduce flooding and supply water in the metro, we cannot deny the fact that it can potentially harm and cause severe deforestation in the mountain range, if pushed. Putting all of these into consideration, we, humans, are the ones who will suffer from our own actions. Moreover, these actions will cost everyone the comfort and the benefits brought by our nature.

We, the Gizmo Rangers, organized the campaign, “Sierra Madre: In pursuit of the 3R's (Rescue, Rehabilitate & Restore).” This project visualizes a functional and a long-living Sierra Madre that will fulfill its purpose of sustaining life and protecting the people against the onslaught of strong typhoons. Furthermore, we envision a world where people carefully think of their actions towards nature, taking into consideration every action’s consequences and outcomes.

This project aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and restore the Sierra Madre mountain range. We aim to bring light to the Filipino people and spread awareness of Sierra Madre’s current condition. We strive for controlling the damage done and we work on ways to maintain and restore the mountain range’s full functionality, so that Filipinos won’t suffer in the future.
