Teach our black children their real history

The Issue

There is a current problem within the education sector that is facilitating the opression of black people. When I speak about black people I do so as an umbrella term which hopes to encompass many other ethnic backgrounds.

Through miseducation, selective information and lack of knowledge, the education system has systematically assisted in the narrow view that black people were civilised, assisted and saved by the western world. This is NOT at all an accurate description of our ancestory.

I call for re-assesment and training to be given in order for accurate history and information to reach the young people of today. This will help black children, whose developing minds and sense of self-identity will blossom. Our young children and their sense of belonging needs to be acknowledged and corrected if we are to move forwards in helping them achieve a better quality of life.

Teaching souly about black history in regards to slavery is not improving systematic racism or the damaging opinions of society. Rather it is causing further segregation, racial and self hatred, and a damaging and innacurate view of black people today. We need to see 'pre-slavery' information and education being taught in schools, and how black people have contributed substantially to the world, in order to help reverse the negative post traumatic generational stress which is within our communities.

Black children need to know how their ancestors contributed to some wonders in the world, both past and present. Without Africa, the modern world would not be the way it is today with all its advancements in technology, science, mathematics, philosophy and other areas that have contributed to some past and present great minds. Credit needs to be given where credit is due.

This will facilitate our young black children to meet the Every Child Matters adgener to 'be healthy', 'be safe', 'enjoy and achieve', 'achieve economic well-being', and 'make a positive contribution to society'.

Without acknowledgement of this serious and damaging misconception, I fear the racial steryotypes and miseducation will continue to disrupted the progression and development of young black minds, which will cause further damage to society for generations.

Black people will not let this rest. We will continue to protest for change, and this should start by the way we are educating the next generation...
