Saving Marine Life and Spreading Awareness About Ocean Pollution

The Issue

Ocean pollution has led innumerable amount of marine life killings. Trashes and debris spewed in the ocean have damaged not just the water forms, but also fishes and water animals who lives in these. This results to numerous amounts of damages it can cause to our environment and to us living in it. Here are some cause and effects of ocean pollution:

Causes:

  • Runoff

This comes from both urban and agricultural areas. Cars, trucks, septic tanks, farms, and timber harvesting are the sources of this cause. Chemicals left from these sources, flows over and under the ground with rainwater, eventually reaching the ocean. This can also cause smothering of marine plants and coral reefs. Adding to this, it causes objects such as plastic to be dumped in the water and never decompose.

  • Intentional Discharge

Scientists have estimated that more than 100,000,000 metric tons of plastic trash are discharged in oceans. Fishing nets and other plastics released in the ocean are a thread to wildlife, potentially restricting their movement, injuring, or starving them. Species that are said to be most vulnerable to this cause are dolphins, turtles, crabs, crocodiles, sharks, and sea birds. Sewage dumped directly into the ocean, with human wastes and mining materials, are also causing problems of pollution.

  • Oil spill

Large amounts of oil are released every year by these ships and platforms sailing in oceans. However, not only oil is discharged in these ships. Fuel, plastic, and human wastes are included in the disposal. These ships also cause noise pollution that disrupts the balance of life for marine animals such as dolphins and whales that use echolocation — a technique where they determine the location of objects using reflected sound.

Effects:

  • Harmful to marine animals
  • Depletion of oxygen in seawater

Low levels of oxygen in the ocean may lead death to marine animals such as penguins, dolphins, whales, and sharks.

  • A threat to human health

With this cited cause and effects, we’re here to save marine life and spread awareness to prevent ocean pollution and help in making solutions to this never-ending problem. Here are the reasons on why we made this petition.

Purpose:

  • Raising Awareness

Raising awareness that we should be saving our ocean. It is the only ocean we got and when it is polluted, we are the ones that would suffer.

  • Creating Discipline

This creates discipline by people picking up their trash instead of throwing them randomly. People cleaning up the area they used before leaving.

  • Encouraging to help our non-profit organizations that help in cleaning our ocean

There are influencers that are taking the next step in cleaning our ocean and encourages people to do donations to help organizations buy materials to clean our ocean.
