Implementing a Culture curriculum in all schools for grades K-12

The Issue

"We need more light about each other. Light creates understanding, understanding creates love, love creates patience, and patience creates unity."

- Malcolm X

When was the first time you learned about a culture that was different from your own? For most people, the answer might be during a college elective. In order to bring unity upon us, we must learn and teach anthropology at a early age in the school system.

The education system that we have created for generations has taught us math, science, history, and language arts. We have yet to teach about people. We can all solve 2+2 but we cannot solve why different cultures celebrate different holidays, and what those holidays mean to them. We as a nation have created a narrative that everyone is different from one another. However, if we were able to create a class talking about our differences, we would soon realize we are more similar than different. The holidays that we celebrate are more alike than we think but are celebrated on different days. Our food that we eat all come from the same meats, vegetables, and pastas but just have a different seasoning or ways to prepare them. The music that we listen to all have a beat but just emphasize a different note.

This world is built upon 7 continents and over 190 countries, all with people of different shapes, sizes, beliefs, and cultures. If each grade could teach 10 cultures each year we can have a growing understanding that we are more alike than different. The class structure can include music, food, and celebrations of each culture. The classes can also go in depth into class discussions with classmates and their families culture. When we learn about each other, we understand each other, and what we understand we do not fear. We only fear what we do not understand.

Please join me in signing this petition so that we can change the narrative of our differences, realizing that we are more similar holding the same goals and aspirations in life. We all want a safe place, a peaceful place, and a fruitful place.

If we can get this petition signed, I will take the responsibility to bring this to the frontlines of the education system. With this, we can begin to learn about one another at a early age.

Kindly send an email to, educatetheculture@gmail.com if you would like to help further progress the completion of building a culture curriculum into the school system. If you are a educator, local or state government official lets start a dialogue on how we can build a brighter and a more understanding future for us all.
