Many students receive overwhelming amounts of homework from each class that adds up and takes up much of their time outside of school. Homework causes sleep deprivation (which has health impacts on its own), takes time from social and extracurricular activities, and causes students to lose focus and engagement with the content they're learning. The "10 minutes per grade level" homework standard supported by Harris Cooper (researcher, professor, and head of Education Program at Duke University), the National Education Association, and the National Parent-Teacher Association limits the homework students K-12 receive every night depending on their grade level (1st graders receive no more than 10 minutes worth and high school seniors receive no more than 2 hours worth) so that students have time for other priorities after school. As a high-achieving high school senior who has tons of homework every night, I am advocating for the implementation of this standard into educators' homework policies in America.
