Esperanza High School is own and was made by white people. This has nothing to do with my ancestors. My ancestors aren’t just a character or something to wear just for “fun”. I understand that schools want a mascot to show pride or power but using native Americans who were on this land first is very racist. Especially the majority of the kids going to this school are white. Even most of the staffs are white. I dealt with a lot of racism going to schools in PYLUSD for being half Mexican and for them to even have a Aztec as a mascot but not being able to respect kids who are different race is not okay. I been wanting a change of mascot since my freshman year and I’m about to be a senior. I was even a cheerleader and screaming “let’s go Aztec” felt weird to me and that’s one of the reason I quit half way through the football season. Some of the kids at the football games would wear red or white marking on there face like the native Americans would. Our rival school would make racist jokes about us having an Aztec as a mascot. Also the name Esperanza in opinion is very racist also. My great grandmother is name Esperanza and if you don’t know what it means in Spanish it means Hope. No one has talk about how our mascot is very racist and all I want to do is educate people and make them realize that this isn’t ok. This isn’t something you can dress up or scream Aztec in sporting events or even sell shirts and put the word Aztec in them.
