Bring back HONOR CORDS to Waipahu High School

The Issue

Waipahu High School USED TO have honor cords for students who earned their Science Technical Engineering Mathematical (STEM) honors, Career Technical Education (CTE) honors, and Academic honors. There are a lot of students who I know who did all three honors.. it would be nice if they brought HONOR CORDS back to Waipahu High School. Graduation cords would make students validated on their accomplishments throughout their 4-years in high school and possibly push students to earn their CTE, STEM, and Academic Honors.

To put this into perspective, the Class of 2020 had 185 students who earned their Academic Honors, 99 students who earned their STEM Honors, and 128 students who earned their CTE Honors. All students who achieved the following honors, only received a certificate.

Students who are apart of the National Honor Society (NHS), National Technical Honor Society (NTHS), and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) wear stoles during graduation. But, there are students who are apart of the follow honor societies but have not achieved any honors. Although honor societies are difficult to get into, students needed to work just as hard to receive CTE, STEM, and Academic honors.

Having honor cords would show that many students in Waipahu High School have the ability to go above and beyond. Following the motto “my choice, my voice, my future.” I think it should be apart of graduation and the fact that students only receive a certificate and their honors called through a speaker at graduation is not good enough. They deserve way more recognition.
