I got excited when this petition reached 500!
Who would have thought more than 4,000 people would sign?!
This is clearly close to the hearts of the wider Kerikeri community.
Further public support was recorded at the ‘Our Kerikeri’ meeting held in March, where public access to local beaches was identified as a key issue for the town.
In fact, it is building up to be a national issue.
In 2006 DOC approved vehicle access via a public conservation strip to Taronui and FNDC allocated $70,000 for the road.
Sadly the project was shelved when the council decided to reallocate those funds to another project.
Now the Department of Conservation has been asked to again approve the existing walking track for vehicles to the top of the hill above the beautiful Taronui lagoon.
A response is expected next week. Crossing fingers!
This time let’s make it happen.
