Over time Kerikeri has been shut out of its most beautiful beaches because access to them is over private land.
However access to the Taronui Recreation Reserve is via a 3.4km Crown owned conservation strip. I feel Far North District Council and DOC should show vision and secure public vehicle access to the top of the hill, so that surfers, snorkellers and families of today and the future can enjoy this beautiful and diverse stretch of coastline, close to Kerikeri.
Surfing is a popular and healthy sport but not all can travel as far as Taupo Bay or Ahipara to catch a wave.
The fully enclosed Taronui lagoon is a beautiful, safe coastal treasure and the lagoon would make an ideal snorkel trail with underwater interpretation possible.
This project was well underway in 2006, after discussion with Ngati Rehia, but it died when the council allocated funds set aside for Taronui access to another project.
Please show your support for re-opening this campaign.
