Protect the beautiful and valuable green belt in and around Rotherham. The Government must insist that brownfield sites and small sites that benefit rural settlements are built first before considering the destruction of the green belt.
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call on the UK Government to do everything in its power to protect the beautiful and valuable green belt in and around Rotherham and to reverse the decisions to proceed with developments around Greasbrough, Wingfield, Thorpe Hesley, Catcliffe, Waverley, Aston, Wales, Kiveton Park, Dinnington, Maltby, Bramley, Whiston, Wickersley and Thurcroft. Our communities will be unrecognisable, our landscape destroyed and transformed into a sprawling urban mass if the developers go ahead and build the planned 14,371 homes and assign 235 hectares for unspecified business purposes.
The construction of over 14,000 homes covering the length and breadth of Rotherham and surrounding areas will cause unimaginable traffic chaos, exacerbate the serious flooding that’s occurred in the area, stretch sewerage systems to their limits and beyond, destroy much loved fields and hedgerows and blight Rotherham’s communities with urban sprawl and overcrowding. The Government must insist that brownfield sites and small sites that benefit rural settlements are built first before even considering the destruction of the green belt.
It is now clear that despite a token show of public consultation, the Labour Councillors on Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council are supporting these developments and ignoring the opinions and objections of local people. I will be working to find any possible means of preventing this from going ahead.
In the meantime please help me to demonstrate the depth of continuing local opposition to this and sign this petition against the planned development:
