Allow the Myxomatosis vaccine for Domestic Rabbits in Australia!
The issue
Myxoma virus, or myxomatosis, is widespread across the Australian environment. It is used by the Australian Government to 'control' the pest rabbit population. Unfortunately it also puts domestic rabbits at risk! There are two vaccinations against myxomatosis, but these are not permitted to be used in Australia for domestic pet rabbits. The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources state that the vaccine is not permitted because the 'virus in these types of vaccines may spread from vaccinated rabbits into the wild rabbit population which could allow wild rabbits to increase their immunity to myxomatosis'. As a rabbit owner myself I think it is important to allow domestic rabbits to be vaccinated and to legalise the vaccine in Australia. Myxomatosis is a horrible virus which causes pain and death for domestic rabbits and causes many individuals, children and families to lose their beloved pets.
