Two weeks ago, I put up a petition to expand the capacity of the A3 at Guildford.

This raised a number of concerns with respondents about the impacts and so following further discussion with the government, the issue of expansion has been excluded and this petition - simply to build the tunnel, is the result.

I am always happy to listen to feedback and hope that many more people will now feel comfortable joining my campaign.

For far too long now, the A3 has been a source of frustration for residents in Guildford and beyond. I’m inviting everyone in Guildford and beyond to join my call to build a tunnel to take the A3 under Guildford.

The details of a scheme are not possible to say for certain at this point - they would be worked up by the Department for Transport and much consultation work done around them.

But they won't progress at all without support from the community and that is why I am asking you to sign this petition to help me take the project to the first stage.

Here are just some of the benefits:

Improving Air Quality – We know that cars are the main source of emissions in Guildford and pollution levels are highest close to the A3. Reducing congestion will be a major step forward in tackling this.

Reducing Journey Times – Congestion on the A3 causes delays to people travelling for work and leisure. It usually leads to gridlock on surrounding roads in Guildford too.

Reducing Noise - Noise from the A3 in Guildford has been a major issue for those living nearby for many years. A tunnel would alleviate many of these issues by placing high-speed vehicles underground.

Improving connectivity – Being the main road from London to Portsmouth, having traffic flowing smoothly on the A3 is crucial to improving Southern connectivity.

Too much congestion; too much noise; too much pollution and too much time wasted in traffic jams. It's time we think big to address these problems once and for all.
