Introduce a regular local rail service along the Northumberland Coast (Newcastle-Berwick)

The Issue

The beautiful Northumberland Coast is paralleled throughout much of its length by the East Coast Mainline between Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Berwick-Upon-Tweed, but the local stations north of Morpeth see very few daily trains.

To help level-up Northumberland, we would like to see a local rail service, as long campaigned for by SENRUG (https://www.senrug.co.uk/NorthOfMorpethLocalServices.php).

This would:

1. Help develop the tourism industry post Covid-19 in a more sustainable way.

2. Give more access to work in Tyneside for locals who do not have access to a car and encourage modal shift away from driving.

3. Help with decarbonisation of transport as the line is already electrified.

We have a fantastic rail asset on the doorstep, an electrified mainline with ample local stations and only needing trains to stop at them!

This is a quick and important win against climate change, a huge potential boost for active travel with stations well connected to cycle and walking routes, and in an area whose economy would hugely benefit from such a tiny investment in providing additional local trains.

Please sign the petition to bring local rail to all stations between the Tyne & the Tweed!
