Salisbury desperately needs a bypass.

After many decades of promises, plans and false dawns, our beautiful medieval city remains blighted by high levels of through traffic. Frequent traffic jams on the A36 - Churchill Way, Southampton Road and College Roundabout - often make journeys across the city a miserable experience for local residents and businesses as well as discouraging visitors from seeing all that we have to offer.

Enough is enough.

We are tired of watching other cities and towns across the South be selected for bypasses while we remain stuck in lengthy tailbacks. It should not take almost half an hour on a Saturday to drive a small handful of miles across the city to go to the supermarket or attend a hospital appointment. Our businesses and tradespeople should not have to avoid travelling across Salisbury at certain times for fear of being stuck in heavy traffic.

The time for action is now.

Under the Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS2), Highways England has been tasked with carrying out a major strategic study to improve road connections between the south coast and the M4. As part of that, a bypass for Salisbury is essential to keep the traffic moving on the A36 and to improve the quality of life for local residents - reducing congestion and boosting air quality.

We urge the Department for Transport and Highways England to recognise the scale of the problem, take decisive action, and build a bypass for Salisbury.
