Move away from the lunacy of white school shirts!

The Issue

Every year thousands of children go to school across the world in crisp new white shirts.
Like miniature business men and women we dress them in what we too consider to be “smart” and “businesslike”.

But our children are not businessmen. They are children. They are learning to play and grow and run around.
Invariably they come home muddy, paint splattered, even food splattered.

As a result, every year, parents spend countless hours trying to remove pen stains, grass stains, food stains, mud stains from these shirts. They use litres of various products and bleaches - none of them good for the environment (or their hands).
Many give up and simply buy a new shirt to avoid the shame of sending their child into school in a 3 day old but forever stained shirt!

Oxfam estimate the environmental cost of buying a new white shirt to be the equivalent of driving a car for 35 miles! THIRTY-FIVE MILES!!! All this for the sake of a clean white shirt for school.

And yet...on the weekend, who would even think of starting their child out to play or paint or cook in a new white shirt!

So aside from the few school who specify a non-white shirt, why is the global norm agreed as white?! Why don’t we change it? Think how many hours of scrubbing chemicals into our water supply we could save. Think how many grumbling complaints to our kids we could avoid. Think how many labour hours and raw materials we could save making shirts destined for bins after just a week of use...

Let’s do it - let’s push for change
