The Issue
Residents of the East Mountains have long chosen this area for its rural character, natural beauty, and strong local community. A proposed zoning change at Torres Trail & North Highway 14 (just north of I-40) will allow large commercial development that will alter the character of our community. Sign the petition if you oppose this change and support development under the existing CB-1 small business zoning that follows the North Highway 14 Development Plan and supports local businesses.

The Village of Tijeras is holding a Public Hearing on March 30, 2026 to change zoning on that property from CB-1 ("Commercial Business") to CB-2 ("Large Commercial Business"). CB-2 allows for the introduction of a gas station, chain retailers and restaurants and/or a hotel; entities with a footprint of up to 20,000 square feet!! In CB-2 is also says: "...is to provide for those larger commercial, retail and business development uses which may potentially produce traffic of 100 vehicles or more per day, which serve the community on a day to day basis ..." This will damage the East Mountain’s unique and beautiful setting. Sign the Petition to protest this change. (Please note that many community members do not oppose development that supports small businesses and the local community. We oppose large chain corporations and businesses open 24 hrs.) Also, call and email Village representatives to let them know you oppose this zoning change:
