The Issue
Protect Spanish Fork: Say NO to the Massive Volition Data Center Project and Amendments
We, the residents of Spanish Fork and surrounding communities, demand that the Spanish Fork City Council deny the text amendment regarding on-site power generation and reject the proposed Volition data center project at 4000 E. U.S. 6 (the former Fingerhut warehouse).
Why This Matters:
The proposed self-powered data center at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon poses significant risks to our community’s health, safety, and environment. Approving on-site power generation for a project of this scale introduces several critical concerns:
Air Quality Risks: Operating massive on-site power infrastructure risks releasing harmful emissions directly into our local air shed, threatening the health of nearby families and children.
Noise and Environmental Disruption: The constant, high-decibel hum of industrial cooling systems and power generation equipment will permanently disrupt the peace of our residential areas and local wildlife.
Resource Strain: Data centers demand immense resources. We must protect our local utility infrastructure and water safety from industrial-scale depletion.
Dangerous Precedent: Changing city ordinances to accommodate heavy industrial power generation sets a hazardous precedent for future zoning and development along our canyon corridor.
Our beautiful town, which lies at the mouth of the canyon, is being targeted for this development that comes with promises of technological advancement. However, the reality is far from the glossy brochures—this development includes a 250-megawatt fossil-fuel power plant that could jeopardize our environment and health.
The term "off-grid" may sound appealing, but it disguises a much less attractive truth. This term is being utilized to gain support by suggesting independence from traditional energy sources. Yet, in practice, it means burning natural gas on a massive scale. Such operations are notorious for releasing significant amounts of nitrogen oxides, compounds that contribute directly to the formation of ozone and further degrade air quality. The developer (Volition), is downplaying this by calling it a "warehouse conversion." Converting an empty storage building into a high-density, power-generating industrial complex is a massive, unprecedented structural overhaul. This is not a simple renovation; it is dropping a heavy industrial utility plant into a zone that was never meant to sustain it.
Utah County already struggles to maintain federal air quality standards for ozone. Our region’s air quality teeters on the edge, and introducing a new, permanent pollution source is a step backward in our fight for clean air. Nonattainment status means we are failing to meet health-based standards set to protect the most vulnerable among us, including children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic respiratory conditions.
We cannot sit idly by as our community’s health is compromised. Spanish Fork is a place where families thrive and breathe easy amidst Utah’s stunning landscapes. We should not trade our clear skies for the economic interests of a handful of stakeholders who may never even call this region home.
Our call to action is simple yet significant: prioritize the wellbeing of our residents. Reject the construction of the data center and its accompanying fossil-fuel power plant.
